Mazda Cars of the Year

Thu 28th Nov 2024

It’s been a bumper year for Mazda with several of its models having a big impact over the past 12 months. With all manner of sizes and shapes available in Mazda’s range, there has never been a better time to investigate the line-up and you’ll find plenty to choose from here at David Hayton.

But what have the high points of this year been for Mazda and what are those key models that you should be checking out today? Let’s take a look.

Mazda CX-60

Mazda’s new CX-60 is one of the freshest additions to the range. Available with several powertrains - including an efficient plug-in hybrid setup - it gets all of the hallmark Mazda touches such as premium materials, great technology and a solid level of fit-and-finish that’ll ensure this practical SUV stands the test of time.

There are some neat design touches integrated into the CX-60, too, including the ‘fading’ indicators that are blended into the design of the front grille. It’s a sleek look and one which ties this larger SUV to other cars in the range.

Mazda MX-30

The cutting-edge MX-30 is currently Mazda’s sole electric vehicle - before a swathe of them arrive next year - and that means it gets all of the brand’s latest technology as well as a focus on sustainability. You’ll find many recycled and eco-friendly materials inside, too, including a widespread use of cork.

One of Mazda’s new additions to the MX-30 line-up is the clever range-extender version. Using a compact version of Mazda’s famous rotary engine, this model provides a helpful boost to the electric motor by using the petrol engine as a generator for electricity.

Mazda CX-5

The ever-popular CX-5 had a revamp recently, introducing a sharper design which breathed new life into this SUV. As with all Mazda models the CX-5 delivers a sportier driving experience than many others in this class, but does so with plenty of spaciousness and practicality to go alongside it.

It’s available with a series of smooth-running petrol and diesel engines, too, with many of them using Mazda’s ultra-efficient Skyactiv-X technology which helps to deliver good levels of efficiency with a decent amount of performance.

Mazda CX-30

The CX-30 treads the line between the typical hatchback and an SUV, providing a ‘best of both worlds’ experience in the process. It’s a slightly smaller car compared with the CX-5, so it’s a good option for those drivers who want a car with a decent amount of practicality but without overly large exterior dimensions. As a result, it’s one of the Mazda vehicles that we’d celebrate strongly.

Rock-solid quality is what you’ll find inside the CX-30, and all versions come with plenty of standard equipment including Bluetooth connectivity and a wide variety of safety assistance systems.

Mazda2

The compact 2 has held a key role in Mazda’s vehicle line-up for a long time now, but it’s still one of our key picks for 2024. It has just been bolstered by the addition of a new hybrid version, which adds an extra layer of efficiency to this already quite ‘green’ hatchback.

With a clever ‘self-charging’ hybrid engine under the bonnet, the Mazda2 is a great option for drivers looking to lower their fuel bills but still provides all of the key features that you’d want.

Mazda MX-5

We couldn’t leave the Mazda MX-5 off our list of cars to celebrate in 2024, could we? The iconic two-seater has been a part of the Mazda line-up for decades and continues to be one of the most sought-after cars that the brand has to offer. Lightweight, surprisingly efficient and good-to-drive, the MX-5 embodies the classic sports car ideals.

Available with both 1.5- and 2.0-litre petrol engines, the MX-5’s appeal lies in its driving experience. However, given that both powertrains return decent fuel efficiency - and the MX-5 itself has a proven track record for reliability - there’s a good degree of ‘sense’ to go alongside that sparkling driving experience.
